The Sankara Eye Foundation was founded by Dr. RV Ramani and his wife, Dr. Radha Ramani, with the establishment in 1977 of the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Centre, a clinic providing subsidized health care to the poor. The success of this venture led to another – the 1982 founding of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Medical Trust, followed by the Sankara Eye Hospitals in 1985.
The work of this extraordinary couple has resulted to date in the founding of a growing number of hospital and facilities across India, the latest being that in the city of Kanpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh, on January 11, 2014.
The Sankara Eye Foundation provides subsidized health care on the basis of one free surgery for every four paid procedures, with an astonishing record of having provided over a million free eye surgeries as of 2014.
The range of services offered by the various Sankara hospitals and clinics included specialty eye care, various community outreach programs, educational programs and an eye bank, all aimed towards a combination of awareness and practical care.
In the succeeding years Sankara has become one of the leading providers of free restorative eye surgery in India, and one of th emost deserving and effective charity organizations on the sub-continent.
